A career in the beauty industry is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be physically and mentally demanding. Long hours on your feet, repetitive movements and the responsibility of dealing with customer expectations can lead to serious challenges such as burnout, posture problems, tendonitis and high levels of stress.

Taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your customers. After all, a healthy and happy professional provides a higher quality service. Burnout can be caused by physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that arises from chronic stress at work. Signs of this symptom include lack of energy, demotivation, feelings of cynicism, and a sense of detachment from your work.

Mossi will give you some tips on how to avoid falling into this state:

• Learn to say ‘no’ to requests that overwhelm you. A professional should not feel obliged to book clients outside of their working hours or take on more than they can handle just to satisfy the client. Remember that the same client who demands so much from you today may turn their back on you tomorrow.

• Between client appointments, take a few minutes to stretch your legs, drink some water or simply close your eyes. These short breaks are very important for recharging your batteries and ‘resetting’.

• When your day ends, make an effort to leave work behind. Avoid responding to messages or emails outside of working hours, as this can create a bad habit for your clients. Instead, devote time to hobbies and spend time with family and friends. Consider getting a massage, taking a yoga class, or doing any activity that helps you relax and focus on yourself outside of work.

Physical health is essential to being able to give 100% at work. Poor posture can lead to chronic pain in the back, neck, shoulders, etc., which can compromise your ability to work.

• Ensure that the equipment you have is right for you. The treatment table or client chair should be at the ideal height so that you do not have to bend over constantly, which can put a lot of strain on your lower back or neck.

• Your arms should also be at a comfortable angle when performing treatments, as poor positioning can cause pain in your shoulders and neck.

• If your job requires you to stand for long hours, you should invest in quality footwear that offers good support and comfort, or a high hydraulic stool.

• Do some simple stretches to relieve tension and prevent long-term injuries. You can do this by taking a few minutes out of your day to stretch your neck, shoulders, and back.

By prioritising your physical and mental health, you will ensure that you can continue to do what you love with passion and excellence. We want you to be with us for many years to come.
